A breathtakingly beautiful and wonderfully vibrant album of eclectic and “not-so-standard standards”, drawing on what have become universally popular songs by Joni Mitchell, Cole Porter, Tom Waits, Nick Drake, Randy Newman, Fats Waller, Sting, Ellington and Gershwin, arranged and orchestrated by the legendary Mike Gibbs, in his usual unique and inimitable style, featuring the equally unique and inimitable Grammy nominee Norma Winstone, aided and abetted by the world renowned NDR Big Band, in a “not-so-standard” big band setting. Characteristically vibrant arrangements by Mike Gibbs serve to spotlight Norma’s wondrous sense of story telling, during which she never fails to elicit moments of pure magic, as the band continues to supply a stimulating and colouristic idyll for her interpretations. The album also contains a deliciously colourful and evocative arrangement of Mike’s own “Some Shadows” which includes the transcribed solo of a previously recorded solo by mutual long-term colleague Kenny Wheeler, orchestrated and arranged with such elegance and poise, continually enticing the performers to weave their eternal magic!
