Alexandre Guilmant (1837-1911) was a famous 19th century French organist and a virtuoso on the harmonium, the favourite instrument of the 19th century salon. On this recording, Kurt Lueders plays Guilmant’s own “harmonium d’art”. This instrument, which still belongs to the Guilmant family, is being recorded here for the first time. The soft yet penetrating sound of the harmonium de salon, the various folk melodies and the great formal and stylistic diversity from which the composer drew his inspiration are all evocative of the society in which Guilmant’s Noëls originated. In his work as a composer, popular Christmas tunes were ubiquitous and this recording brings together pieces from several areas of Guilmant’s oeuvre.
