We are inclined to forget that the viol family still enjoyed a certain success in the land of the violin at the beginning of the 17th century; works that were once performed in private concerts given in the palace of Cardinal Francesco Barberini now form part of this Concerto di viole. One of the Roman composers represented here is the enigmatic Cherubino Waesich, the author of the most important volume of canzoni and madrigals intended for these ensembles.
