Hugely influential on Broadway composers, who saw it as a model of stage musical writing, Show Boat represented the first time that serious black and white characters held the stage together as equals. Featuring songs that have since entered the standard repertory, such as Ol’ Man River and Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man, it enjoyed an initial run of almost 600 performances and, since its first revival in 1932, it has been revived half a dozen times and filmed three times.
This collection includes selections from the 1932 and 1936 studio albums as well as the 1946 Broadway revival and includes Paul Robeson’s legendary performance of Ol’ Man River, the song that made his name.
