The present set displays numerous aspects of the art of Yvonne Lefébure (1898-1986) and complements the image that one generally has of a pianist devoted to Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and the great French composers Fauré, Debussy, Ravel and Dukas. However, her repertoire and her very culture were far more vast. But if there are no discs to celebrate a heritage, the memory soon fades. Had François and Yvette Carbou not, on many occasions, held out a microphone in her final years, her recorded legacy would have been quite slim, regardless of its quality. And even though she was recognised 'in high places' – by Wilhelm Furtwängler, for example, or Otto Klemperer – as a pianist of the front rank.
Then there would remain the memory of a great teacher. Everyone agrees on this point but that would be too limited an image, for she was, first and foremost, a great performer, and her pedagogical qualities stemmed precisely from her experience as a performer and concert artist.
