Lang Lang,
Vienna Philharmonic / Valery Gergiev.
This is truly the ‘Summer of Lang Lang’! The hottest Classical artist on the classical music planet, as described by The New York Times, is back with his second recording for Sony Classical, which is devoted to his very own piano hero - Franz Liszt.
In addition to this hugely exciting new release, Lang Lang is the headline soloist at The Last Night of the Proms on 10th September, the culmination of the world’s biggest classical music festival, where he will perform repertoire from the new album. He will also play to thousands for the Proms in the Park concert moments before his Last Night of the Proms debut, which is televised live on BBC1 & BBC2 and broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. The 2010 Proms season reached a record TV audience of over 18 million people across the season.
Lang Lang is also headlining this year’s classical night at the iTunes Festival on 25th July at the Roundhouse in London, which will also feature works from the new album.
Media coverage for Lang Lang is expected to be huge, and already this year there has been growing interest as a result of his highly successful series ‘Lang Lang Inspires’ at the South Bank Centre.
On this album, together with the Vienna Philharmonic and Valery Gergiev, Lang Lang plays Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 1 as well as a selection of some of the most commercial, famous, virtuosic and beautiful solo pieces by Franz Liszt such as La Campanella, Liebestraum and Hungarian Rhapsody Nr 6, Consolation etc.
His 200th anniversary being this October 22, Franz Liszt is commonly regarded as the first pop star in music history. A touring piano virtuoso himself, Franz Liszt composed some of the most famous and virtuosic pieces ever written for the instrument.
Lang Lang’s performance at the iTunes Festival at London’s Roundhouse on July 25 will also feature works of the album. His appearance at the festival amongst other superstars from the pop- and rock world fits perfectly into the idea behind his new album (Liszt = Popstar). This will be heavily pushed through media & it is expected to garner great support around the iTunes Festival from Classic FM and all media especially the BBC around the Proms, which are promoted throughout July -early September.
As well as the audio, there will also be a video element to this release later in the year, available from 7th November as DVD and Blu-ray. The products will consist of Lang Lang’s solo recital at London’s Roundhouse, as filmed during the iTunes Festival and will also feature a documentary entitled “Visions of a Virtuoso” produced by award winning production company “Boomtown Media”.
