George Macfarren was considered by many of his contemporaries as the greatest British dramatic opera composer since Purcell. Described by Edward J Dent as ‘very full of good fun and on the way to Sullivan’, Robin Hood is Macfarren’s masterpiece, one of an impressive roster of now neglected mid-nineteenth century British operas, notable for its fine ensemble scenes, witty motifs, and deft, imaginative orchestration. Victorian Opera’s recording of Wallace’s Lurline (8660293-94) was widely admired: ‘the opera and the performance are both a delight.’ (American Record Guide)
This is a première recording of a work that was very popular and critically admired in its time and is due for rediscovery. It will appeal strongly to collectors of both operas such as Wallace’s Lurline, already recorded by us, and also those interested in nineteenth century British music generally.
Ronald Corp is founder and Artistic Director of the New London Orchestra and the New London Children’s Choir, and Musical Director of the London Chorus and Highgate Choral Society.
His many compositions include a symphony, a piano concerto, cantatas and two string quartets (8572578). Recent projects include an opera for children, The Ice Mountain (8572777).
