Adam Holzman (guitar)
The guitarist and composer Johann Kaspar Mertz was born in Pressburg (now Bratislava) in 1806. In 1846 he nearly died from a medical overdose of strychnine, accidentally administered by his wife. Despite this trauma, during the following year, possibly as a result of his enforced convalescence, he began to produce the Bardenklange (The Barbic Sounds) for solo guitar.
Bardenklange is a collection of thiry pieces including nearly every conceivable genre from etudes, dances and variations to character pieces. Titles from the collection such as Fingal’s Cave and Song Without Words suggest the influence that composers like Schubert and Mendelssohn must have had upon Mertz.
