Benno Moiseiwitsch (piano), Philharmonia Orchestra/ Constant Lambert
Studio recordings 1925-50 Volume 6 in Naxos Historical’s Benno Moiseiwitsch edition brings together his solo and concerto recordings of music by twentieth century composers and includes the unsurpassed recording of Delius’ Piano Concerto.
Moiseiwitsch’s fabulous touch, seemingly effortless virtuosity, and intense sense of atmosphere resulted in superb performances of the French and Spanish repertoire. He also gave magnificent accounts of works by composers with whom he was not immediately associated: the Russians Stravinsky and Prokofiev.
Also featured are several less well-known composers: the English composer John Vallier, the American Abram Chasins, the Finnish Selim Palmgren and last but not least, another East European virtuoso pianist, Leopold Godowsky, whose fiendish Fledermaus paraphrase Moiseiwitsch despatches effortlessly.
