It was only three days after the first performance of Mozart’s ‘Marriage of Figaro’ that an arrangement for string quartet appeared in the music shops of Vienna. In 1786 this practice was regarded as “business as usual” even though it may seem a little disrespectful towards Mozart’s masterpiece for us today.
The unique arrangements heard on this recording are those recently discovered in the Cloisters of the Benedictine Monks of Melk in Austria.
