Brilliant Classics is pleased to release a new series of 11 DVD recordings of opera productions from La Scala Milan. Italy’s most famous opera house has produced some spectacular performances in recent years some of which are featured in this series. Most are by well-known composers but there are some less familiar names amongst the productions, for instance Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur, Rossini’s La Donna de Lago and Pergolesi’s La Frate ‘nnamorato. The other DVDs feature works by Verdi, Puccini and Donizetti.
A rare recording of Pergolesi’s second opera, a comic tale of tangled love in which three girls resist their arranged marriages in pursuit of the same young man. Rediscovered by conductor Riccardo Muti, this forgotten jewel sparkles in its 1989 period production. Unlocked from the archives of RAI television, this is a classic recording from one of the world’s great opera houses.
