Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) was, along with Dmitri Shostakovich, the greatest Russian composer of the Soviet Period. Unlike his compatriot, Prokofiev left revolutionary Russia in 1918, not returning until 1935. All of the works in this set were written during the final years of the composer's life, indeed, the Sinfonia Concertante and Seventh Symphony were his final two compositions. The Fifth Symphony was composed during the War and first performed with Prokofiev conducting, in 1945. It was an instant success and has become one of the composers most popular works.
