Anton (Antonín, Antoine) Reicha (Rejcha) (February 26, 1770 - May 28, 1836) was a Czech-born, later naturalized French composer. A contemporary and lifelong friend of Beethoven, Reicha is now best remembered for his substantial early contribution to the wind quintet literature and his role as a teacher - his pupils included Franz Liszt and Hector Berlioz. Reicha was also an accomplished theorist and wrote several treatises on various aspects of composition. Some of his theoretical work dealt with experimental methods of composition, which he applied in a variety of works such as fugues and études for piano and string quartets. The works on this album are his Variations for solo bassoon, accompanied, and his Grand Quintet for bassoon, accompanied.
The Bassoon is an often largely ignored instrument so, when an album is produced to celebrate the partnership of this woodwind gem with the strings of the violins, viola and cello we should sit back and enjoy. Recorded in Hybrid SACD the perfection produced by Jane Gower (bassoon), Madeleine Easton and Alice Evans (violins), Galina Zinchenko (viola) and Catherine Jones (cello) is beauty to behold.
