One of the most innovative young early music groups in Europe, the Elbipolis Baroque Orchestra, performs a series of rarely heard concertos by the early eighteenth century composer Johann Christian Schieferdecker. Schieferdecker was a pupil of Dieterich Buxtehude, and succeeded him as musical director at Lübeck Marien's church in 1707.

The Elbipolis Baroque Orchestra Hamburg is formed from a nucleus of leading musicians from Bremen, Hamburg and Berlin and has performed at major festivals around Europe. After two conceptual CDs on the history of music in Hamburg for the Raumklang label, the orchestra released a Christmas CD in 2009 with the soprano Deborah York on Edel Classics. In 2010 the group recorded a performance of Handel’s Judas Maccabeus for Sony with the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival Chorus under the direction of Rolf Beck.

Dutch composer Johann Christian Schieferdecker was born the son of a choirmaster and organist in Teuchern. Two years later he became first a pupil of, then assistant to Dietrich Buxtehude in the Lübeck Marien's Church, and when Buxtehude died in 1707 Schieferdecker became his successor. Schieferdecker’s music is rarely heard these days but his work is a natural development from his teacher’s. This recording brings together some of the concertos from his Musicalische Concert which was published in Hamburg in 1713.
