Naxos’ ongoing survey of the works of Franz Schreker continues with this fascinating release, previously available on Marco Polo, documenting two of his orchestral works which span some thirty years.
Schreker’s Vorspiel zu einer grossen Oper (Prelude to a Grand Opera) was written in 1933 as an overture to the proposed but never completed opera Memnon. The plot of the opera centred upon the legend of Memnon, the son of the Dawn and later the ruler of Ethiopia, who was believed to provide miraculous music as the dawn broke. Schreker used a large orchestra for this piece, with exotic melodic contours and lush instrumental colouring to suit his Ancient Egyptian subject.
The Romantic Suite dates from earlier Schreker’s career and was composed in 1902, the year in which his first opera Flammen (Flames) was first heard in a concert performance in Vienna. Cast in four movements, the “Romantic Suite” is an effective and assured work, at times approaching symphonic stature.
