The 'regenerated' flute

Cutting a path through the output of two composers little known by the general public, this disc intends to do justice to a repertoire both sadly famous – stigmatised by Nazism – and unjustly forgotten – disdained by the Darmstadt generation. In so doing, this allows for rediscovering what a place of choice the between-the-wars period reserved for the flute, shown to advantage at that time by highly varied instrumental formations.

The Czech Erwin Schulhoff (1894-1942) and the Dutchman Leo Smit (1900-1943) were part of that generation of Jewish musicians who died in the concentration camps, like Hans Krása, Viktor Ullmann and Gideon Klein. Held in contempt owing to his Communist involvement and banned from the Berlin stage (where his opera Flammen was to have been premiered), the first figure on the list of artists stigmatised after the 1938 exhibition of 'degenerate' art in Düsseldorf, he was arrested three years later and deported to the Wülzburg concentration camp where he died of tuberculosis on 18 August 1942. As for Smit, he saw his career brutally interrupted by the growing difficulty of Jewish artists to get performed: constrained to go to the Amsterdam Ghetto, he was locked up in the ' Jewish Theatre' then deported to the Sobibor concentration camp, where he was gassed on 30 April 1943.

Beyond this horrifying destiny, Schulhoff and Smit shared a joint French influence. Whereas the former was a multi-facetted creator (between a taste for Czech folklore, progressive inspirations, Dada provocations and a passion for jazz), the latter cultivated a more homogeneous style; but both were marked by Debussy.
