SCOTT'S MUSIC BOX Music from Terra Nova. The British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913)
This new prestigious 2CD set is based around the centenary of Scott’s fateful second expedition to the South Pole, 1910-1913.
The Gramophone Company (the original name for EMI) lent the expedition two HMV gramophones and several hundred 78 rpm discs, many of which are referred to in diaries and journals of expedition members.
The album comprises recordings that Scott is known to have taken, and recordings by popular artists of the day from The Gramophone Company catalogue that he is likely to have taken, on that legendary trip. Repertoire is a mixture of music hall and theatre favourites, popular contemporary songs and instrumentals, operatic and classical excerpts, and comedy / spoken word.
This has been produced in cooperation with the Natural History Museum, who are currently holding a major exhibition about the expedition and where one of the original Gramophones lent to Scott is on display (courtesy of the EMI Archive Trust). The exhibition runs until November at the NHM, after which it moves to the Canterbury Museum in New Zealand.
The majority of tracks for this album have been expertly transferred and mastered from original EMI archive 78 discs at Abbey Road by one of the world’s best historical transfer engineers.
The 2CD digi-pack extended booklet will feature extensive notes from a leading expert in the music of this period, an introduction from the Natural History Museum’s exhibition curator and various rare memorabilia from the EMI archives.
