The Marienkantorei, Lemgo under Rainer Johannes Homburg has now recorded the second part of Heinrich Stöelzel’s Christmas Oratorio. According to an old liturgical tradition two cantatas are heard on each of the three Christmas holidays. The epistle cantatas from Stöelzel’s oratorio of 1728 are already available on MDG 605 1232. This disc adds the “Gospel Cantatas” to them.
Also included on this disc are his radiant German “Te deum” and his New Year’s cantata “Gehet zu seinen Toren ein”. Stöelzel was one of the most productive composers of his time and the quality of his works places him on a level with the great German baroque composers of the 18th century. These superb performances were recorded at the historic Hallenkirche in Lemgo.
