A masterpiece of Viennese Opera, Johann Strauss’s The Gipsy Baron was the most successful work during his lifetime. There were 87 successive performances in Vienna after the premiere in 1885, 140 productions all over the world in the next fifteen years.
The piece is overflowing with wonderful waltz tunes and irresistibly comic numbers (such as the ‘Prince of Pig’ Zsupán), as well as extra Hungarian spice!
The master of ceremonies is Armin Jordan, one of today’s foremost opera conductors, who recent excelled himself in the recent release of Zemlinsky’s Florentine Tragedy (V4987).
A brilliant cast of young singers seconded by the echt-Viennese veteran Rudolf Wasserlof.
