For Richard Strauss and his librettist Harry Graf Kessler, Die Josephs-Legende (The Legend of Joseph) was in its time a daring and compelling theatrical experiment - a combination of ballet and stage play. At the same time it is a variation on Strauss’s central theme: love between an older woman and a youth. Here the elder is a married woman, and the younger is the inexperienced, almost still childlike, dreamy, ingenuous shepherd boy Joseph. But though it is sadly and undeservedly overshadowed by his operas and orchestral programme music, it remains a fine example of Strauss’s music.
Adding further interest is the fact that this recording from 1952 is conducted by Robert Heger, a composer and conductor who was very close to the circle of Strauss intimates. The orchestra is the Bavarian State Opera, Munich.
