The vogue for writing works for solo violoncello emerged in the second half of the 18th century, at the time the thoroughbass method of composition disappeared. The beginnings of this process can be found in the practice of the cellists of San Petronio in Bologna. The artists in the first decades of the 20th century earned tremendous success by bringing the tone of the cello, in particular in the high registers, close to the intensive expressiveness and brighter tone of the violin. In the hands of Pablo Casals, Gaspar Cassadò and Emanuel Feuerman, younger by a generation, the cello was transformed in its whole range into a more potent instrument altogether, an equal to the violin in expressiveness. This “change of idiom” led, simply said, to the performer overshadowing the virtuoso.
