This album is a new addition to the highly successful EMI Classics series THE VERY BEST OF... devoted to the some 35 famous singers such as Maria Callas, Dame Janet Baker, Placido Domingo and José Carreras, as well as English Song with piano and English Song with orchestra.

In 1986, EMI Classics engaged the outstanding American conductor and musical theatre archivist, John McGlinn, to record music from great Broadway musicals. The first two albums were made in New York (Gershwin Overtures and Kiri sings Gershwin) and then in 1987 in London McGlinn began a series of complete recordings of famous shows, starting with the ground-breaking 1927 Show Boat by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II. As far as possible, all the original orchestrations and vocal arrangements were used, and the singers were all chosen for their ability to re-create the authentic performance style of the period for each of the shows.

In addition to recording five complete scores (Show Boat, Anything Goes, Kiss Me, Kate, Annie Get Your Gun and Brigadoon), McGlinn also made a number of individual albums, including Broadway Showstoppers, Jerome Kern Treasury, Night and Day and several others, all using original orchestrations and arrangements, and performed in the authentic style of the day.

This collection brings together the best of EMI Classics’ McGlinn catalogue covering a wide representation of all the great Broadway composers, including George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Kurt Weill, Frederick Loewe, Richard Rodgers, Vincent Youmans and Leonard Bernstein.

The singers include Kim Criswell, Frederica von Stade, Teresa Stratas, Josephine Barstow, Rebecca Luker, Karla Burns, Jerry Hadley, Brent Barrett, Lambert Wilson, Thomas Hampson, and Bruce Hubbard.
