History was made early in 1955 when the American contralto Marian Anderson made her Met debut as Ulrica in Verdi’s Un Ballo In Maschera – the first performance in a leading role by an African-American artist at the Met. Anderson reprised her portrayal for this Saturday afternoon broadcast on December 10, 1955, joining an exemplary cast led by Zinka Milanov, Roberta Peters, Jan Peerce, and Robert Merrill, with the legendary Dimitri Mitropoulos conducting the Met’s orchestra and chorus.
