Quatuor Mosaiques

The BONUS TRACK is a newly discovered movement for string quartet, first published in "Journal für Quartetten Liebhaber auf zwey Violinen Alt et Basso“ and bearing a close resemblance to Woelfl's piano sonatas op 6. It was discovered by Dr Margit Haider-Dechant in the library of the monastery in Kremsmünster/Austria.

This paladino music release marks the beginning of a collaboration of label owner Martin Rummel and the director of the Music Collection of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, Rudolf Hopfner. „I am delighted that the recordings of the instruments of this eminent collection are returning to Vienna and that paladino as a young Austrian company may once more represent Vienna as one of the world’s leading music centres internationally“, says Mr Rummel.

Four instruments by the Viennese luthier Franz Geissenhof (1753–1821) are featured on this CD. It is the internationally renowned Austrian-French Quatuor Mosaïques, formed by four musicians of Nikolaus Harnoncourt’s „Concentus musicus Wien“, to have recorded three string quartets by Mozart’s protégé Joseph Woelfl (1773–1812). The result is a fresh and lively recording, nothing like straight from a museum. The extensive booklet gives information on the luthier and the composore. The collection with its home at the Neue Burg holds a large number of ready-to-play instruments of all periods. Some of these instruments are documented for the first time on CD. Both the Kunsthistorisches Museum and paladino music make it a particular point to match the time of the making of the instruments with the music recorded. Many more to come.
