Debussy Centenary Discoveries offers new insights into a captivating, inventive and influential musical genius.

Each recording on these 3-CDs is in some way a first: Chanson des brises and Diane aux bois make their debut appearance in any form; the unfinished opera La Chute de la Maison Usher is heard just as Debussy left it; the Chansons de Charles d’Orléans appear in their original version, while Debussy’s transcriptions of his own Jeux and Khamma, and of works by Schumann, Raff and Saint-Saëns, are also new to the catalogue. Pianists Philippe Cassard and Jean-Pierre Armengaud are among the musicians who lead this fascinating voyage of discovery.

• This 3CD set is a collection of ‘newly discovered’ works by Debussy:

works which have never been recorded before (Chanson des brises, Diane aux bois);
a work never before recorded in the state in which the composer left it (La Chute de la Maison Usher)
a work (later revised by Debussy) never before recorded in its original version (Chansons de Charles d’Orléans)
works never before recorded in this particular reduction or transcription made by Debussy (Khamma; Jeux; works by Schumann, Raff and Saint-Saëns)

• This set comprises recordings which were made especially for Warner Classics’ recently released 33-CD box Debussy: The Complete Works - - the first-ever complete Debussy edition.

• These recordings have been made by first-class artists, such as pianists Philippe Cassard (who owns the original manuscript of Chanson des brises) and Jean-Pierre Armengaud, who has probed deep into the scores, the texts and the spirit of Debussy.

• Claude Debussy (1862-1918) was a determining force in the history of music.

• Born near Paris and trained at the Paris Conservatoire, he lived through a period of change that was rich in cultural activity as Romanticism made the transition to Modernism. While always seeking – and finding – something new, Debussy consistently gave expression to a distinctive, compelling and captivating musical personality.

• His music, notable for its sensual beauty, colour and adventurous harmonies, often suggests a freedom of form and expression, yet it is also characterised by discipline and restraint.

• He composed major works in a great variety of genres: piano music, chamber music, song, orchestral music (La Mer is a symphony in all but name), ballet music, choral works, opera, music for the theatre.

• He took an inventive approach to instrumental sonorities, whether writing for solo piano or for the orchestra.
