Songs, Vol. 3
Jana Hrochová Wallingerová, Mezzo-soprano
Giorgio Koukl, Piano
This recording focuses on three of Martinu’s song-cycles, and a selection of individual songs from an early period in his life that sheds fascinating light on his enthusiasm for song composition. Songs On One Page and Songs On Two Pages were written during his American exile, both utilising traditional and folk texts in compact but expressive ways. Set to Japanese lyric poetry, Niponari is one of his most important early compositions, revealing a transition from late-Romanticism to impressionism. Of Volume 2 in this series (8572310) BBC Music Magazine wrote: ‘Some excellent songs here, in radiant performances’.
This is the third volume in the series. Volume 1 was on 8572588 admired as ‘beautifully and often movingly sung…a most rewarding disc’. (Gramophone) and volume 2 on 8572310. Of the second
volume BBC Music Magazine wrote; ‘Some excellent songs here, in radiant performances.’ Works on One Page has recorded by Magdalena Kozena on DG in 2000 on an all-Czech song recital
including songs by Dvorák and Janácek, so our focus on all- Martinu is more of an inducement to collectors of the composer’s music.Young Czech mezzo-soprano Jana Wallingerová has been widely praised in this series and Giorgio Koukl’s pioneering and critically-lauded complete Martinu piano music series for Naxos has won numerous plaudits.
